A Big Day

Remember when you were a kid and your birthday was tomorrow?
Remember how excited you were?
Remember how special that day felt?

For me it was the anticipation of what present I was going to get.
It's all about the presents when your a kid.

My birthday is in May which means I was outside playing some form of ball everyday with the neighborhood kids.
( For any kids who happen to be reading this, the phrase "Playing Outside" means actually going out into the fresh air away from any computer gaming devices, and using your imagination to drum up the fun for the day. When it got dark, we had to "Come inside", which we hated.)
Baseball
Football
Basketball
Wiffle Ball
Stick Ball
Kick Ball, you name it, we played it, and my present most years was a particular ball or glove I happened to need at the time.
It was always a good day.

On the boat today we celebrated Mike's birthday. He's a deckhand on here.
He didn't seem too excited, maybe because he's 51 and on a boat.
Mike didn't get any balls, or any gifts for that matter.

BUT WE DID BAKE HIM AN AWESOME CAKE!!!

It was made by Brad, our other deckhand. I was brought in as a consultant at the 11th hour. I'm serious, it was 11PM and Mike would be getting up for watch any minute and we had nothing to write "Happy Birthday" with on his cake.
Bad planning on our part.

After searching the pantry, we took a box of Fruit Loops, yeah that's right, someone actually eats Fruit Loops on here, and we artistically added "MIKE" into the chocolate gooey-ness before he got up.
Multiple tries of writing "Happy Birthday" with them proved only that those tasty little food colored O's were just too big.

I think he felt like it was his birthday....for about 15 minutes, then he had to get to work.
Contrary to how it looks, the cake was quite tasty.

I loved playing "outside" when I was a kid. We stayed outside as long as we could. Kids miss out on this today. I hear more kids say how bored they are!!! We were never bored. Never!!
Great cake!
Happy Birthday Mike

Another great cake success story. At least this one didn't catch on fire. Love the part about playing outside...so true. Brings back memories of my Mom yelling our names just as it got dark. If we were lucky, we could talk her into letting us "stay outside" and play hide-and-seek in the dark. Have a great weekend.

I'll bet Mike appreciated the effort... Heck I'd dig right into that one too. I like how you all become more like "family" together on the boat.
