Never to old

Recently, I was talking to my oldest, Erin, on the phone. She was in our kitchen with her mom close by preparing something delicious. Erin mentioned to me she was glad to see that I had started a Blog. Mary Ellen, my wife, without missing a beat said in the direction of the phone, “aren’t you too old for that?” I was shocked! I thought she had my back.
So, I’ve been thinking. Am I too old for that? At 53 years old, am I too old for certain stuff? I never really thought about it much.
But now I’m worried. Now I’m afraid to admit I have a BLOG. Yesterday as I sat at my desk on the boat writing my latest entry to post on my BLOG, a fellow crew member appeared at my door. When he casually asked what I was doing, I jumped and pulled the cover of my laptop down and stammered, “uh, nothing, just writing a letter to my daughter.” I looked as guilty as if I were searching the “the google” for porn.
Exactly when is it that you are too old for stuff? Last time I was at the beach I sat in my chair and dug a hole in the sand until I reached water. Then, using the wet sand I made this bad ass sand castle. Am I too old for that?
I understand that with age comes more responsibilies. In my case I have people who depend on me and I must make sure I have my business in order. Once that is taken care of, I don’t think I’m too old for anything. I hope that never changes.
I attended a family reunion a few weeks ago. My cousin Tom heard I was looking forward to going to a concert with one of my daughters. He was incredulous. He wanted to say,” Aren’t you too old for that?” He showed good manners and bit his lip. (this coming from a guy who is closer to 60 than 50, and he runs in marathons a few times a year. Who’s too old for what?)
In my opinion, if I enjoy doing certain things now that happen to be similar to things I enjoyed when I was in my 20’s, I shouldn’t stop because my hair is grey. A few weeks ago at the end of a long day working with my wife in the yard, she went in to prepare dinner. I grabbed a basketball a shot a few hoops in my driveway. I did that when I was 10. Am I too old for that foolishness? I stood at the foul line, thought to myself, “tie game, 1 second left, and one foul shot to win the game.” I guess I’m too old for that. FYI….nothing but net, game over!
I pay my taxes. All my cars have insurance. I have a nice medical plan for my family. All 3 of my girls will be out of college soon. I like PEARL JAM. Keely and I saw them in concert a few weeks ago. I knew all the words to the songs. I’m 53 and I had a great time.
