I watched parts of the National Championship football game last night. Like many of the Alabama football players, I too play hurt. The center for the Crimson Tide played last night with a ligament issue in his left foot.
Last week as I snorkeled in the Caribbean looking for "big game", or actually, really pretty little colorful fish, I didn't let the injury or the blood that streamed down my face concern me.
In a football game, if a player is injured but tells his coach he is ready to play but the coach disagrees, they will take the players helmet away from him and hide it, assuring he will not re-enter the game.
When my family saw my bloodied head, they wanted to take my mask away. NO ONE TAKES MY MASK AWAY! I'm a gamer.
Here's how it happened. As my daughter and I swam out from the beach about 50 yards in search of the sea turtle, we suddenly spotted a couple of them grazing on some sea grass on the bottom about 15 feet below.
We hovered above them on the surface just watching these beautiful armor plated creatures, always keeping in mind that we are just visitors in their beautiful underwater world.
The temptation to get even closer was too much so we soon found ourselves directly above these salad eating turtles Suddenly one of them angles his body skyward and with the grace of a stealth fighter glides towards the surface. As he gulped in some air I cruised ever so closer. Mr. Turtle than turned his body and paused, about 1 foot from my face, looking directly into my eyes. I was thinking to myself, please don't attack me with that vise like jaw of yours.
And then, he tilted his colorful shell downward and headed back to the bottom for another helping of lush sea grass.
So, how did I get injured?
I was walking the beach looking down for treasures and I suddenly walked right into a thorny branch that was over hanging the beach.
It was an attack by a branch, I tell you.
As I walked back, bloodied, toward our family base camp on the beach, looking for some medical attention and some sympathy, what I received instead was, " wait dad, let me get the camera."
That's right, I'm a gamer.

You are a real Robinson Crusoe:-)
Darn... and here I thought it was due to a Jacques Cousteau moment!! Funny story. LOL
Ha! And a master story teller to boot! Ohhhh how envious I am of the snorkeling and the warm weather and time with the family- awesome! Enjoy!
Sitting here on a cold Connecticut afternoon - I wish I had a bloody face in beautiful Culebra! BTW - one of my clients was there the same week you were there!
I bet they gave you a bad time there too. How exciting to see the turtle so closely. I love encounters with wild life like this.
oh you had me....i thought for sure it was a sea turtle accident !
but you know, branches are dangerous. they really are.
glad you're okay !!
Ha!! I love it...I can just see them rummaging around for cameras to catch this special moment!

LOLOL....
...and wow, what an awesome sea turle grazing experience!...
... and I'm not laughing at you, really.
PS.. you lost that game to the branch :-)
It's only a flesh wound ;-)
My wife got her thumb caught in a hand-held mixer and my first thought was to photograph the bent mixer blade. I didn't win any prizes for compassion that day ...
So, how were the turtles? Pretty spectacular, I imagine.
Awesome story and experience with the turtles - which somehow makes the "smacked in the head with a branch story" all the more amusing-for us as readers; clearly, for you, not so much!Sounds like a memorable vacation.
We gamers have got to watch out for those vicious low hanging limbs. They'll get us every time. The worst part is they sneak up in front of us while we're concentrating on what might be sneaking up behind us. Be careful out there... but don't let them take away your mask...
Too funny! Hope all is healed.
