Capt Jack was heading up to the wheelhouse to conduct our weekly Safety Meeting, when we surprised him with a cake. He's 54 today. Note the fine detail done by our boats baker, otherwise known as Shane, my assistant engineer. He added a tugboat and a barge as well as the initials of everyone on the crew. We didn't have any candles, so Shane thought it would be a good idea to use matches.
It wasn't.
It wasn't.
In the above picture you can see the "barge" part of the cake is fully ablaze. After we put out the fire and frantically waved magazines in front of the smoke detectors, we managed to save the tug.I won't mention the smoke damage done in the wheelhouse.
When the laughter and the kidding stopped, we had our safety meeting. The subject matter was "How to prevent fires on the tug."
I can't make this stuff up.
It's a partyJack won't soon forget.

Classic!
Oh jeezzz this is typical a MEN thing. Why ever come to think of put matches on a cake just to have a little fire...you guys are beyond me...but sure I had the biggest laughter since a long time picturing you all waving to fool the smoke detectors. Still find it hard to type these words because I'm giggling all over.
Have happy days. And please do watch out on new years eve will you!
Happy Birthday Captain Jack! You guys sound like you have some good fun at work and the baker did real good! I am giggling at your photos, and the thought of your faces when you heard "how to prevent fires on the tug!" Good times!
Happy Birthday Captain Jack!! Matches????!!!! Seriously?? This is one reason why men don't live longer than women!!! LOL!! Sounds like a terrific party!

Men...gotta love em. Great story. Who knew matches could start a fire like that, huh? And that first photo, the angle of the camera made me think "what a big ass cake! How many guys are on that boat?"...and then I scrolled down. Happy Birthday, Captain Jack.
We call those matches "barn burners." Good thing y'all didn't have to go down with the ship!;-}
A little creativity can be a dangerous thing, especially in the hands of guys!! Hope the cake tasted as good as it looked. Happy B-day Cap'n Jack!
What an interesting story and a life on a boat that I am looking more forward to know.
