The trees pictured below are found all over the Provence area of France.
Notice how these seem a bit, bare?

They are supposed to look like this.

They are called Plane trees.
And the reason the trees in the top photo look sick,
is because they are.

Some towns we visited had hundreds of these sick looking plane trees.
The reason the trees look like that is because of a parasite,
or some such little creature
has been infecting and slowly killing these beautiful trees.

The origin of these little killers
is from ammunition boxes that arrived in France
during WWII
from the United States.

The wood that made the ammo boxes carried with them
a Plane tree killer.

How strange is that?

Wow, that's bizarre. They resemble sycamore trees.

uuugh, that would frustrate me to no end!.. is there nothing they can do to discourage the bugs and stop the distruction? Phragmities is an invasive plant that grows in our waterways and chokes off the water supply - not native to this country but I'm not sure how it got here.

That is strange and sad. Oh what tangled ways we live. Sad to know it came from the US. The trees are so beautiful.
